Tea Routine: Permission to Play
We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing*.
Somewhere along the way, adulthood became a job description.
Play got replaced by productivity.
Joy got rescheduled.
And spontaneity quietly disappeared from the calendar.
But here’s the truth that often gets overlooked:
Play is not a luxury. It’s a lifeline.
I didn’t realise how much I missed it until I started dancing in the kitchen again.
Doodling, just for fun.
Laughing over a board game I didn’t care if I won.
Sometimes, it’s even simpler than that.
A cup of tea.
A pause in the day.
A moment to let my mind wander without purpose.
That’s when creativity returns. That’s when I feel most like myself.
Play creates space.
For connection. For clarity. For joy.
It reminds us what it feels like to be fully present, even if just for a few minutes.
So this week, try something playful.
Kick a ball.
Dance to your favourite song.
Draw something silly.
Make a cup of tea and enjoy every sip without rushing.
Because joy isn’t something we have to earn.
It’s something we’re allowed to feel, right now.
What does play look like for you?
And when was the last time you let yourself enjoy it?
I’d love to hear.
*Thanks, George Bernard Shaw
