Tea Routine: The Teacup Conversation Ritual
When did your phone become the first and last thing you touch each day?
We carry the world in our pockets.
But the more connected we are online, the more disconnected we can feel from real life.
I’ve started keeping my phone on airplane mode while brewing my tea.
No pings. No scroll. Just quiet.
It’s a small ritual, but it’s changed how I start my day.
On Sundays, I go a step further.
More time offline. More time with my family.
Less noise. More presence.
The difference is real.
More mental space. More calm. More clarity.
If your mind feels crowded and your focus is scattered, a digital detox might be exactly what you need.
Try leaving your phone behind on your next walk.
Create a phone-free zone at home.
Or uninstall the apps that steal your attention and give so little back.
Even a short break from your screen can feel like a deep breath.
You don’t need to be available to everyone all the time.
But you do need to be available to yourself.
What’s one small way you could unplug this week?

Dr. Justin Romano’s TEDx Talk on Smartphone Addiction
Dr. Justin Romano, a child and adolescent psychiatry fellow, warns that we are facing a new, widespread pandemic: addiction to smartphones. Unlike traditional addictions, this one is subtle, socially accepted, and deeply embedded in our daily lives.
Romano highlights how these devices act like “digital slot machines,” always within reach, always offering another hit of stimulation. While many people might not recognise their dependency, the impact is profound, particularly among youth and young adults, where increased screen time is linked to rising mental health challenges.
We may not all change our digital habits immediately, but increasing awareness is the first step toward reclaiming our attention, health, and agency.
